Preventing Nursing Home Abuse and Neglect
Identify well-ranked nursing homes to place your loved one in for the right care. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services maintains a database of nursing homes. When selecting a facility, use the Medicaid nursing home ranking database to find one in your area that meets stringent qualifications. Make sure you visit the homes that you have chosen and conduct interviews with management and staff. Ask a lot of questions, take a tour of the facility, and make sure you feel comfortable before placing your loved one in their new home.
Once your loved one is comfortably placed in their new home, visit. Visit at times that are not regular and do not announce to them or the staff that you will be visiting. Your family will love these surprises and the staff will not be able to have the opportunity to “prepare” for your visit. Listen well to your loved one and stay alert for any signs that are listed above. Ask your family member questions about their stay.
